Poetry – What You Need to Know

Poetry – What You Need to Know

We think that creating beauty through language is a superpower that not everyone possesses, because it is believed that true poetry must be strictly the product of a strong inspiration, a feeling or something that gives us enough courage to give us the task of experiencing with words, but the truth is that true poetry before being beautiful must be immensely sincere.

There is no more poetic expression than that which, despite all the good and bad things, seeks the sincerity of feeling; precision is something that the reader will dictate, while the method will be more than metric; reminds Martin Heidegger “Poetry and art, in general, are manifestations of the truth.”

Indiscriminately, life and language are full of poetic expressions. Complications appear when trying to channel an emotion by sticking to linguistic accuracy. If there were a word for everything we conceived as human beings, we would understand love perfectly, and not only that, we could also attend to other existential dissatisfactions through poetry.

Nothing can be truer when talking about poetry, because sometimes even the most exaggerated feelings are considered poetry, always resorting to crazy comparisons to try to approach the correct way to express what we feel.

If your desire is to write a great poem before you die, or if you are one of those who usually turn to literature to face the adversity of life and have no idea how to start writing poetry, Amr Muneer Dahab can be of help. He is a Sudanese-Canadian writer, poet, author, and essayist, and an electrical engineer with an experience of more than twenty years as a columnist in opinion journalism particularly in the Arab world.

As a pro poet, here are some tips he has left for you to follow.

Read and listen to poetry

Review the linguistic structure of poetry, identify the rhymes and inquire a little in the minor art verses and major art verses, the best first steps: sonnets, haikus, and verses and try to identify with any of the forms of poetry.

Clarify your reasons

Every poem has a purpose or a recipient, in particular, try to surround concepts and words of poetic nature to your goal, go to a couple of places to feed inspiration and write ideas or thoughts that illustrate your experience with respect to the recipient in small stanzas.

Play with the contradictions

Make comparisons and allow yourself to play with the contradiction by mixing the ideas a little, think that if they were colors, the combination of shades might surprise you.
