Determining Priorities for Car Maintenance

There are important priorities that we should consider when maintaining our car. We should be aware that keeping our car to run well can be a rather difficult task and in some cases, it could actually be intimidating. This is especially true when we are not familiar how cars work. In this case, we should know what we should do first. If we ignore a few things, the problem could escalate causing significant problems in the long run. The first priority is to make a list of things that can cause our cars to become dangerous to drive when they don’t work properly. It is important to make sure that our car stays at highly safe operating conditions. The highest priority should include tires, car’s braking system and the vision system. It means that the windscreen should be clear and free of obstruction. Rear view and side mirrors should also be in good conditions. Simple issue like loose rear view mirror can be quite dangerous in long-distance trips.

The next is priority is to make a list of things that could cause us to get stranded. The most obvious component is engine. When it starts to fail, the car often rattles and slows down, giving us enough time to pull over. There are also other components that could leave us stranded, such as timing belts, clutch fan, constant velocity joints, fuel lines and radiator hoses. We should also perform various normal maintenance tasks, such as checking engine coolant, transmission oil and engine oil. Problems with these won’t cause fatal accidents or our car to stop immediately, but they may slowly result in major damages when ignored. These maintainance tasks are easy and affordable to accomplish, but can keep our old car to run for much longer period of time. We should be proactive with how we improve and maintain our car. One of the most common ways to maintain our car is by performing regular oil changes. There are different types of oils and they are actually the life blood of our car.

Regular oil change can keep our car healthy and it’s a cheap way to rejuvenate the car engine. Combustion by-products and grit can be removed in the crank case and other areas inside the engine. For most cars, oil can be changed every 5,000 miles. Oil change may need to be performed more frequently in harsher conditions, such as frequent short trips during winter seasons and dusty environments. The oil car can be checked directly to see whether there’s excessive discoloration due to higher level of combustion by-products. High-mileage cars may need special kind of oil with higher amount of additives to prevent the accumulation of deposits amd oil burn-offs. We should check what kind of oil that’s appropriate for our car. As an example, before winter, we may need to change the oil with the one that performs best during sub-zero temperature. This will ensure that the engine can start easily and wear can be minimized.
